Wayland Additive Presents IN718 Updates at EMATec 2026

I recently had the opportunity to present our latest work with Inconel 718 (IN718) on the Calibur3 system at the 2026 International Conference on Emerging Applications of Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing (EMATec), which was hosted in Dresden, Germany.

Titled “NeuBeam® Electron Beam AM: A novel and unique Pathway for High-Performance Alloy 718”, the presentation highlighted the relationship between processing parameters, particularly powder bed temperature, and the resulting microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of IN718 components. A key emphasis was placed on how the NeuBeam® process represents a significant advancement in eBeam additive manufacturing (AM) by overcoming the limitations of conventional systems by eliminating the traditional "sinter cake." By maintaining precise control over thermal conditions, this technology ensures consistent material performance comparable to conventional manufacturing routes while simultaneously leveraging the design and production advantages inherent to AM processes.

During the session, I discussed experimental observations supported by microstructural analysis and mechanical testing, illustrating how variations in thermal history influence phase formation, precipitation behaviour, and overall strength of the alloy. The ability to achieve similar properties across different processing conditions was particularly well received, as it opens pathways for greater process flexibility and industrial scalability.

The EMATec Conference provided an excellent platform for engaging with researchers and industry professionals working in advanced materials and manufacturing technologies. I had several insightful discussions with experts in the field, which offered valuable perspectives on post-processing strategies, material qualification, and future research directions for nickel-based superalloys in AM.

EMATec 2026 served as a premier platform for researchers, industry leaders, and developers to discuss the intersection of material science and manufacturing sustainability. The triennial event focused on how advancements in powder metallurgy (PM) and AM can address modern geopolitical challenges, the climate crisis, and the global energy transition.

I’m happy to report the Wayland presentation has been recommended to be included in the conference review for a forthcoming issue of Metal Powder Technology, so that’s one to watch for.
